Introduction

Sarum Voices is a choir of young singers based in and around Salisbury. For more information about the choir generally, please click on the link to the Sarum Voices Home Page. The Choir specialises in providing music for services, functions and concerts, and has built up a superb reputation over the past ten years for providing top quality music for all manner of occasions.

Repertoire

The choir is taken from a pool of some 70 excellent musicians, with a core of about 16, meaning that there is little, if anything, that is out of the question. Most of of the standard repertoire can be performed with just 14 singers, with specific pieces manageable by groups as small as 4. Some of the most suitable items are listed below, but this list is by no means exhaustive:

  • Bach, Johann Sebastian - Jesus bleibet meine Freude (Jesu, joy of man's desiring)
  • Brahms, Johannes - Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen (How lovely are thy dwellings fair)
  • Brown, Disraeli - A Gaelic Blessing
  • Bruckner, Anton - Locus iste
  • Duruflé, Maurice - Ubi caritas
  • Franck, César - Panis Angelicus
  • Fauré, Gabriel - Cantique de Jean Racine
  • Howells, Herbert - Like as the hart
  • Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus - Laudate Dominum
  • Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus - Ave verum
  • Purcell, Henry - Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts
  • Rutter, John - A Gaelic Blessing
  • Rutter, John - The Lord bless you and keep you
  • Stanford, Charles Villiers - Beati quorum via
  • Tallis, Thomas - If ye love me
  • Walford Davies, Henry - God be in my head
  • Walford Davies, Henry - Psalm 121

Hyperlinked titles in the lists above point to MP3s of the starts of the tracks in question. All files are between 20 and 30 seconds long, and 150 to 250 kB in size.

    Instrumentalists

As well as an Organist, we can also provide many other instrumentalists.

    Finances

The cost of putting together the right choir for your service is affected by many factors, most of which can be addressed by a preliminary meeting or phone call with the choir director, Ben Lamb.

First, what music do you want? If you are looking for a Bach or Handel chorus, then you will need a choir of at least 14 singers to give it the impact that is expected of such a work.

Second, what is the size of the building? Clearly, a tiny church which only allows room for 50 guests will need a small choir, which then affects the choice of music...

Third, what is the size and condition of the organ? On a tiny, unreliable instrument, excerpts from the Verdi Requiem would not be a viable option, so it may be best to go for unaccompanied music.

Fourth, what are the acoustics of the building like? Allegri's "Miserere" sounds divine in St Paul's Cathedral, but ineffective in a small church with little or no reverberation time.

Once all of these questions have been considered, a projected cost can be calculated using the following guidelines:

  • Director's fee: £150
  • Organist's fee: £120 (we must insist on using our own organist if there is any accompanied choral music)
  • Choir fund: £100
  • Singer fee: £50 per singer
  • Travel expenses will be calculated in advance and added to the total.

NB ALL fees are DOUBLED if the service is recorded (audio and/or video).

Included in this breakdown is the cost of a consultation with the director to determine the most suitable music.

We aim to make your service as uplifting as possible at this difficult time - please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.
